Internet Explorer 11 Setup Cannot Continue Because a More Recent Version
Go into control panel > Windows Update > View update history
Find the failed update, and double click on it. This will give you an error code. Post said code and the error message and we might be able to point you in the right direction

Thank you so much, I would appreciate it. It's Error Code 9C48. Installation Status is Failed. It "helpfully" suggests that I may need to restart my computer for this update to take effect. Believe me, I have. It takes forever to shut down while it installs, then when it's turned back on it goes through the whole installation process again, along with a message that updates failed to install.

Try downloading IE11 full version from this website instead of using WU. See if it installs.

Okay, I tried it an I got this error message within a few seconds after downloading and starting the installation process:
Internet Explorer Did Not Finish Installing
Set up cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer
Since this has been going on for several months already, I know that this couldn't be the original reason it didn't install. Plus, IE 11 still keeps showing up as an Important Update in WU (and it still fails to install every time. All the other updates install without incident.
Flummoxed . . . (good word). :-)

Something else you can also try if this doesn't work, you can go into control panel and uninstall IE10. This should revert your system to IE9. Then Reinstall 10, and see if 11 will go on after that.

Okay, will try that later and report back (have some work I need to complete, yikes). Thank you for your help, and I promise to try that and report back. Very much appreciate your time and expertise. :-)

Did you ever get a fix for this as I'm having the same issue

No, I did not.

Lots of good ideas, but nothing so far has worked.

I know this thread is a few of months old, but I had this error today on a new machine I was building. I solved the issue by:
1. Uninstalling IE11 using the below command
FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart
For more info see this site

2. Download and install IE using the offline installer http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/internet-explorer/ie-11-worldwide-languages
3. Run Windows Update to install the updates.

This worked for me, thanks! I did have to reboot after the uninstall because it was still saying I had a newer version installed. But the reboot cleaned files out and then I was able to install IE.

This worked for me. Thanks Matt!

Thanks Matt. Your solution worked for me. However, I had to restart tg=he device after the uninstall.

Hi, thanks so much Mark for providing this post and a detailed solution! I have since moved on to a new laptop and Windows 8. I tried Windows 10 briefly, but ended up uninstalling it because it messed everything up -- sigh, somedays the IT gods are kinder than others.

Thanks Matt, you're a legend!

Thanks Matt. This resolved my problem.

I was having the same problem with multiple computers on my network, and this is the method that worked for me.
1. Go to msconfig, select selective startup and only load system services --> Services tab --> disable all non-Windows services (Reboot).
2. run sfc /scannow. Wait for this to finish and reboot the machine.
3. Download and run Microsoft Fix-It tool and install updates (excluding Internet Explorer updates), and reboot the machine to finalize them.
4. Disable the current IE version in Programs and Features. You guessed it, reboot again for this to take effect.
5. Install Internet Explorer 11.
This is by no means a short process, but after troubleshooting this, digging through forums for a fix, and implementing this solution on most of my computers I can verify that this works.

Thank you Matt Bryant, this saved me more hours of heartache. You the man!

Thank you Matt, your solution worked for me too.

Thank you Matt. A post that is 3 years old is still resolving these IE issues!
